What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain can occur for a variety of reasons. While some people find they have discomfort or stiffness that comes and goes, many other people face intense and often debilitating back pain; they are forced to acknowledge their limited capacity and often cannot perform the simple tasks of daily living. Examples include -

  • Strained Muscles/Sprained Ligaments

Straining a muscle in your back can cause stiffness and pain and reduce your range of motion. This can happen when you -

  • Lift or move an object suddenly or awkwardly.
  • Overuse your back.
  • Have had poor posture for many years, among others.
  • Spinal Disc Issues

The discs separating your vertebrae help cushion the spine and allow it to be flexible. If these discs bulge, herniate, or become misaligned (which can happen due to an injury, movement, or simply age), the consequence typically manifests as pain or intense discomfort.

  • Arthritis
    • OA or osteoarthritis refers to a specific type of degenerative joint disease. OA is the breakdown of joint cartilage and can potentially impact any joint and create pain and other symptoms.
    • Spinal stenosis refers to a condition that happens when your spinal canal narrows – often compressing a nerve or causing numbness, pain, and muscle weakness.
  • Osteoporosis

This medical condition happens when bones become brittle and weak. Those with osteoporosis have a significant risk of fracture or breakage.

  • Obesity

Carrying excess weight – especially for those who fall into the obesity category (i.e., have a BMI that is equal to or greater than 30) - can create misalignments and cause abnormal/awkward movements that generate pain and other symptoms.

  • Skeletal Issues
    • Scoliosis.
    • Other abnormal spinal curvatures.
